Dr. Edward P. Furlani earned a PhD in theoretical Physics from the University at Buffalo (UB) SUNY and is a professor at UB with joint appointments in the Depts. of Chemical and Biological Engineering and Electrical Engineering. He transitioned to UB from the Eastman Kodak Research Labs where he performed and directed modeling and design for the development of commercial materials and devices.
His industrial experience spans 26 years and a broad range of technologies in fields that include microfluidics, magnetics and microsystems technology. He has leveraged his industrial experience at UB where his research group uses computational models to develop materials and devices with new functionality that is engineered from the nano-to-macroscale.
Dr. Furlani’s current research encompasses the areas of microfluidics, with an emphasis on biomedical systems; photonics, especially biosensing technologies and bioapplications of magnetic particles. His cumulative research contributions include over 100 peer-reviewed publications, a graduate text on applied magnetics, numerous book chapters and invited conference presentations. In addition to his theoretical work, Dr. Furlani has a distinguished record of translational research and currently holds 152 U.S. patents.
